CONCERT REVIEW: Doomtree & Toki Wright (Turner Hall Ballroom, Milwaukee)

Minneapolis hip-hop may have entered the public consciousness mainly through Atmosphere's miserabalist anthems, but it's since grown into a thriving scene that reflects an eclectic city while still retaining much of its indie-rock aesthetics and emo-rap sensitivity.

VIDEO: Storylords - Episode 01 - Activating Prior Knowledge Before Reading

Produced at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1984, Storylords is an educational series following the young Norbert as he tries to save the mythical land of Mojuste from the evil clutches of Thorzuul, armed only with helpful reading techniques. Though it still runs during instructional blocks on PBS, the series was shown in 3rd grade classes for a long time, at least long enough to become an integral part of my fond elementary school memories. I'm not sure how far this traveled beyond Wisconsin (if you enjoyed it in some far-flung city, leave a comment), but thanks to the Internet, we can all revel in its cheesy splendor. Holy Camole! Hop on your Bike-o-tron and let's ride!

CONCERT REVIEW: The Pharmacy, The Midwest Beat & Bobby Hussy (Circle-A Café, Milwaukee)

Sunday nights are usually kind of a drag; there's never anything going on, and when there is, people rarely seem in the mood to go out. On occasion though, a bill and a venue can strike the perfect balance between taking it easy and living it up that's ideal for that weird gray area between weekend and working week.

Charles Bradley's passion for performing sustained him through decades of bad luck and no luck at all, until a chance encounter with the head of Daptone Records gave him the opportunity to turn his passion into a profession.

VIDEO: How TV Ruined Your Life - Episode 04 - Love

Presented by British journalist and screenwriter Charlie Brooker, the six-episode BBC Two series How TV Ruined Your Life examines the myriad ways television has warped our perception and expectations of reality, leaving us hopelessly unfulfilled. This episode focuses on the unrealistic, idealized love affair TV props up as the norm, and how that relationship is actually a hopeless, soul-crushing fantasy. Happy Valentine's Day!

VIDEO: Holmes & Yo-Yo - Episode 03 - The Dental Dynamiter

Though it was ranked by TV Guide as one of the 50 worst TV shows of all time, Holmes & Yo-Yo really doesn't deserve its dismal reputation. It's not like it's brilliant or anything, but this 1976 ABC series about a bumbling cop and his new robot partner is still rather endearing, mainly because of its novel premise and lovably corny humor.

VIDEO: Collection - The Social Seminar

We tend to think of educational films as stiff and dull, but in the early 1970s the National Institute of Mental Health and UCLA's Extension Media Center produced The Social Seminar, an amazing series of short films that examine the lives of a diverse set of young Americans with an unobtrusive, yet compassionate, cinéma vérité style.

FEATURE: Dozens of Musicians Get All Messed Up Again

The concept is rather simple really: take a bunch of talented Milwaukee musicians, shuffle them up and randomly group them into new bands, then just step back and see what happens. But its simplicity, and the tossed off nature of it all, belies what is, in all reality, a rather inspired creative experiment.

VIDEO - Star Wars Droids - The Great Heep

I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise, given the expanded Star Wars universe's focus on continuity and detail, but it's still pretty cool that Star Wars: Droids actually has a place in the wider saga, exploring R2-D2 and C-3PO's adventures between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.  Getting even more specific and obsessive, this 48 minute special, broadcast on ABC in 1986, would be properly sequenced between episode 9 and episode 10 of the main series.

VIDEO: Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp - Episode 01 - There's No Business Like Snow Business

In a nutshell, ABC's Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp was basically Get Smart, but starring chimpanzees instead of people. Personally, I think there's a few shows on right now that could benefit from similar casting choices.
