CONCERT REVIEW: Drugs Dragons, Head On Electric & Cyborg Fortress (The Cactus Club, Milwaukee)

If you were looking for a good introduction to the current Milwaukee rock scene, you could do much worse than seeing Drugs Dragons, Cyborg Fortress and Head On Electric. Together here on the same Thanksgiving night bill at the Cactus Club, it was hard not to wonder why the three bands don't play out together more often.

FEATURE: The Savior of Rock 'n' Roll: GG Allin

The boundary lines between what is and is not "art" are always up for debate, but things quickly take on a more excitable tone when you add to the debate a healthy dose of bad taste, anything that steps beyond societal norms. GG Allin, god rest his disgusting soul, was the walking embodiment of bad taste, a pissing, shitting mess of a human being who walked the line between artist and criminal. Looking back on the man's tumultuous life for the Network Awesome magazine, I can't say I came to many hard and fast answers about art or about Allin himself, but it's a strange, messianic tale that is worth telling regardless.

EVENT REVIEW: Found Vs. Found (The Oriental Theatre, Milwaukee)

As previously reported on this site, Found Magazine and The Found Footage Festival have teamed up, and are in the midst of a joint tour. Or maybe "teamed up" is a poor choice of words, perhaps, "entered into a viciously brutal, but entertaining, bloodsport" is more appropriate, but regardless of how seriously you take the "Vs." in Found Vs. Found, it makes for a fun night of comedy, videos and music.

ALBUM REVIEW: Childish Gambino - Camp

Though he's best known for his work in humor, graduating from the sketch group Derrick Comedy to writing gigs on The Daily Show and 30 Rock before landing the role of dim-bulb Troy Barnes on NBC's Community, Donald Glover has also been fruitfully pursuing a music career for years now, releasing rap albums under the name Childish Gambino, an alias he got from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator. Now he's back with his fourth album, Camp, which, like its predecessors, is smart and ambitious, but bears a relentlessly emo tone that wears thin after a while.

Which isn't to say that Glover's complaints, or the feelings behind them, are without merit. He spends much of the album railing against the rigidity of identity forced upon young black men in America, the idea that if you're not hard or hood, you're not anything at all, and the way that attitude percolates through rap and relationships. It's something that's needed saying for a long time (whatever happened to hip-hop's big tent?), and he deserves props for daring, but it would come across a lot better with a bit more levity and a little less persecution complex.

But if the album gets a little leaden after a while, there's no denying the skill Glover brings to the proceedings. The production work is slick and soulful, and lyrically, he has a writer's eye for complex metaphors and a comedian's voice for the vicious put-downs; but by the time Camp winds to a close with an elegant little teenage love story, you're left wishing he had stepped back and allowed the album to open up and breathe a little more. It's best in small doses, but at least boasts a maturity that bodes well for future releases.

CONCERT REVIEW: Ray Davies (The Pabst Theater, Milwaukee)

Few songwriters in the rock canon are as revered as former Kinks frontman Ray Davies, and for good reason; few people have his ability to encapsulate complex issues and emotions into wryly pithy lyrics. Playing The Pabst Theater last night, the legendary performer let loose a variety of classic tunes, as well as a few that are maybe not so well remembered.

VIDEO: Metalocalypse - Episode 01 - The Curse of Dethklok

Another of my contributions to Network Awesome's "Heavy Metal Week", the very first episode of the Adult Swim series Metalocaplypsecreated by Brendon Small (who was also behind the brilliant Home Movies) and Tommy Blacha. The series, set to return to the airwaves next spring, follows the exploits of Dethklok, the biggest, most brutal band on the planet. The music for the series was composed by Small himself, who even brought the band into the real world, touring with actual metal bands and releasing two albums. Enjoy!

CONCERT REVIEW: Cave w/ Absolutely, Catacombz, Running and Trophy Wives (The Riverwest Public House, Milwaukee)

One of the good things about Milwaukee's proximity to Chicago is that it's easy for bands to meet and share the same stage, and of these frequent visitors, Cave is one of the bands worth checking in with time and time again. When in town, they usually play the Cactus Club, but this time they played the Riverwest Public House, which resulted in no discernible reduction in awesomeness.

FEATURE: The History of Metal in One Man's Career: Ronnie James Dio

As part of Network Awesome's "Metal Week", I took a look at the long, winding career of one Mr. Ronnie James Dio, from his teenage doo-wop groups to the top of the heavy metal heap. Regardless of what you think of his music, if you've ever thrown up the devil horns at a kick ass show, you've got Dio and his outsized voice to thank.

FEATURE: Battle of the Bizarre: Found Footage Festival Takes On Found Magazine

As a culture, there's no denying that we create a lot of trash, and while some of it ends up on multiplex screens and bestseller lists, most is quickly forgotten. From strange tapes collecting dust in thrift stores to candid snapshots stuck in the pages of old books, there are whole realms of media that your average consumer would never see if not for the efforts of outlets like Found Magazine and the Found Footage Festival, curators of these bizarre and sometimes touching artifacts. Now the two have joined forces for a joint tour, and to mark the occasion, I talked to Found Magazine editor and co-founder Davy Rothbart and the Found Footage Fest's Nick Prueher about the tour, their friendly rivalry and the wide world of found.
